The coaching education program program provides students with cutting-edge informtion and practical experience to pursue a coaching career in youth sports, interscholastic or intercollegiate athletics, and Olympic or professional sports. The degree can be pursued through an on-campus option or on-line.

To complete the program, students can choose either a thesis or non-thesis option. Students who choose the non-thesis option must decide by week five of their first quarter whether they will meet the requirements for coaching education by either successfully completing comprehensive exams or a mentored writing experience.

Thesis Option: If you elect a course of study with a thesis option, you will be required to complete eight (8) additional hours of electives and a thesis minimum of five hours.

Non-Thesis Option: If you elect a course of study with a non-thesis option, you will be required to complete an additional 12-14 hours of electives.

Eligibility to Apply

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for unconditional admission to the School of Recreation and Sport Pedagogy graduate program in coaching education:

1. Earned bachelor’s degree in athletic training, exercise physiology, physical education, sport sciences, recreation or related field from an accredited college or university. If your bachelor’s degree is in an unrelated field, you may be still be admitted.

2. Minimum overall undergraduate GPA of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale on last 90 quarter hours or last 60 semester hours.

3. Satisfactory Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores.

Application Process

Applications and application materials must be submitted electronically. The department does not accept hard copies of application materials. All materials must be submitted before an applicant is considered for admission.

To begin the application process, go to www.ohio.edu/graduate/apply.cfm. Be sure to include ALL materials required for your application prior to submitting the electronic application. A complete application packet must include the following:

1. Electronic application and appropriate application fee. The application fee is non-refundable.
2. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores. Note: You must request official scores for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) be sent directly from the testing agency. Student-supplied photocopies are not accepted as official, but may be included for review and to assist with official score matching. The Ohio University reporting code is 1593.
3. Official transcripts from each post-secondary institution attended. You can upload unofficial transcripts with your electronic application. Submit official transcripts directly to the Graduate College.
4. A two-page typed biography that includes information about yoru background and experience and how they relate to your future career goals.
5. A resume of your educational background and professional work experience.
6. Three recommendations. Electronic recommendations can be submitted directly through the application by providing the e-mail addresses of your recommenders. At least one recommendation must be from someone who can attest to your qualifications in your chosen field and one must be from an academic faculty member who can support your ability to produce successful academic work at the graduate level.

All non-native speakers of English must demonstrate proficiency by submission of official TOEFL (550 minimum paper-based test/80 iBT) or IELTS score (6.50 overall average). Tests older than two years are not accepted. See elsewhere in this catalog for exemptions and more details regarding  English proficiency requirements.

Applications for admission are accepted year-round. Typically, applications for both admission and financial aid for the next academic year should be received by April 1. International students should apply by February 1 to be considered for financial aid for the next academic year.

All documents received by the University in connection with an application for admission become the property of Ohio University. They will not be returned or forwarded to another agency or college/university.
