Program Overview

Semiconductor-based integrated circuits, or chips, are essential building blocks of all modern conveniences based on electronic computing, communications, and control systems. The certificate program in Semiconductor Technology introduces students to the basic science and engineering principles required to understand the basis of this industry and fabrication and/or design of semiconductor chips. The two core courses are intended to provide a general overview of the semiconductor industry, chip manufacturing processes and basic material properties, which must be taken by all students, in the sophomore or junior year.

Subsequently, the three elective courses will provide students with training options in different theoretical and practical skills related to semiconductor technology, including analytical methods and fabrication tools, conventional and novel electronic materials, chemical and physical process steps used in chip fabrication, design and use of electronic devices, integrated circuits as well as industry-grade simulation and design tools. Depending on the career interests and actual major of a student, many of these elective courses can be taken in the junior or senior year of their college experience.

Freshman/First-Year Admission

Students are expected to meet the admission requirements for the Russ College of Engineering and Technology. Incoming freshman will be expected to have four years of high school math and a year of chemistry or physics.

External Transfer Admission

Students are expected to meet the admission requirements for the Russ College of Engineering and Technology. Incoming freshman will be expected to have four years of high school math and a year of chemistry or physics. Transfer credits may be counted toward the elective requirements, but not for the core certificate coursework.

Opportunities Upon Graduation

Completion of this certificate wil enable Ohio University students to add fundamental knowledge and expertise needed to seek jobs in semiconductor industry, materials science, and engineering as well as design of highly integrated electronic systems. Students may also go on to enroll in graduate programs relevant for micro- and nano-scale technologies.
