Program Overview

The tutorial program in music is designed for excellent scholar-musicians who wish to work closely with dedicated faculty through tutorials, individual lessons, and ensembles. The program balances a commitment to breadth and rigor, while providing opportunities for self-disciplined and highly motivated students to creatively explore fundamental and cutting-edge issues. The four-year program includes a tutorial each semester, applied study and upper-division music courses, language courses, and collateral studies. Individualized instruction and a flexible curriculum allow each Honors Tutorial College student to pursue a course of study tailored to his or her interests, including music history, theory, composition, performance, or some combination.

Admissions Information

Freshman/First-Year Admission

All undergraduates, whether prospective freshmen or transfer students, are required to audition for admission to the degree programs offered by the School of Music. In general, students may not pursue coursework in the major until they have successfully auditioned and been admitted to a music degree program. In the HTC program in music, applicants are selected on the basis of superior academic ability and the potential for self-motivated study and research. Applicants typically are required to submit additional essays, and an interview with the director of studies is required for admission. More information, including materials and deadlines, is available at www.ohio.edu/honors/tutorial-college/apply.

Change of Program Policy

First-year students at Ohio University may apply to transfer into the music tutorial program and the Honors Tutorial College. These students must meet the same entrance requirements as entering freshmen.

External Transfer Admission

First-year students at another institution may also apply to transfer into the music tutorial program and the Honors Tutorial College. These students must meet the same entrance requirements as entering freshmen.

Opportunities Upon Graduation

This program is for high ability students who prefer a more independent approach than is usually available in traditional programs. This rigorous and comprehensive educational experience is sensitive to the needs and interests of the individual student. Students have the opportunity to progress well beyond material covered in conventional courses, and the program provides excellent preparation for graduate study.
