Certificate Overview

The Graduate Diabetes Certificate educates and prepares students to better understand the multifaceted and complex condition of diabetes. The program offers a unique opportunity for students to obtain interdisciplinary education and training opportunities as well as service learning, clinical and/or research opportunities guided by experts in diabetes. The certificate requires a minimum of 14 credit hours, and the typical and expected time to complete the certificate is two semesters.

Certificate Learning Outcomes

Students who complete the Graduate Diabetes Certificate Program at Ohio University will be able to:

Explain diabetes and the disease process
Explain how diabetes is treated and managed
Describe the interdisciplinary nature of diabetes treatment and management
Apply current research in the field of diabetes to relevant areas of interest and future practice
Apply knowledge learned to practicum field work

Opportunities upon Completion

Students who graduate with a Graduate Diabetes Certificate will potentially have broader career possibilities, including careers involved in diabetes prevention, management, and treatment. The independent study portion of the Graduate Diabetes Certificate provides an opportunity for skill development, ranging from research design and development to clinical application.

Admission Requirements

A letter grade of 3.0 (B) or better in all core and elective courses is required for certificate approval.

International Students

This certificate program does not permit full-time enrollment in residence at Ohio University, and an I-20 cannot be issued based on admission to this program alone.

Completion Requirements

Students must complete 14 credit hours including three core courses and a minimum six credit hours of electives as detailed below.

Diabetes Core

Complete the following courses for a minimum of 8 hours:

NUTR 5320 - Diabetes From Bench to Bedside
NUTR 5932 - Independent Study in Diabetes
NUTR 5960 - Trends in Diabetes
NOTE: Graduate students will be required to focus on a project that is distinct from their master’s thesis or graduate level project. Students who are completing research projects must select to do their independent study in a community or clinical setting. Likewise, students who are involved in community or clinical based projects must complete their independent study in a research setting. The independent study for diabetes typically requires 6-8 hours of independent work per week and should not interfere with graduate student’s thesis or final project. In addition, graduate students wishing to pursue the diabetes certificate will be required to deliver a local, regional, or national presentation (oral or poster) related to diabetes or related disease.
