Program Overview
The medical assisting technology (MAT) program prepares competent entry-level medical assistants in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains. The curriculum covers administrative and clinical tasks found in ambulatory health care. Upon graduation, a student may sit for the CMA (AAMA) examination and/or continue with one of several 2 + 2 bachelor degree options. The Medical Assisting Technology (MAT) Associate in Applied Science degree program at Ohio University Lancaster, Ohio University Chillicothe, and Ohio University Southern is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (http://www.caahep.org/) upon the recommendation of the Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB). Admissions Information
Freshman/First-Year Admission
Students must complete a program application and a series of prerequisites prior to December 1 before enrolling in MAT 1700 and MAT 2010. These prerequisites include a completed health form with doctor certification that they are sufficiently healthy to perform clinical and practicum duties; up-to-date immunization for Hepatitis B; a signed Technical Standards statement on file; and any course prerequisites. Many clinical sites require that students must pass a background check (FBI and BCI), have up-to-date immunizations for MMR, Varicella, Tdap (within the last 10 years), have a current-year PPD test, and documentation of negative drug screens prior to students being at the sites. Students at these sites will be required to have a background check (FBI and BCI), up-to-date immunizations for MMR, Varicella, Tdap (within the last 10 years), current-year PPD test, and drug screen performed at their expense any time that it is required. All documents must be submitted to the MAT program director.
Change of Program Policy

Opportunities Upon Graduation
Upon graduation, graduates may sit for the CMA (AAMA) exam. Medical assistants perform a wide variety of clinical and administrative tasks in ambulatory health care settings, such as physician offices or urgent care clinics. Students may also pursue bachelor’s degrees in health administration, health communication, technical studies, or specialized studies.
