Program Overview

The dance minor in choreography and performance is designed for individuals majoring in other fields who wish, in the course of their college experience, to gain an understanding of the art of dance. This program may be applied toward the dance major sequence.

Admissions Information

Freshman/First-Year Admission

In addition to University admissions requirements students must apply and audition for admission to the Dance program. The first semester of work in the Dance minor is probationary.

Change of Program Policy

Upon admission to the Dance - Performance and Choreography minor, appropriate forms must be completed by the student in the Dance office or College of Fine Arts office.

External Transfer Admission

No requirements beyond University admission requirements and requirements stated above.

Opportunities Upon Graduation

This minor enhances students’ kinesthetic knowledge and performance presence, which can be applied in any career that requires physical skill and confidence. Through courses in dance composition, dance production, and dance history/cultural studies, the Dance Performance and Choreography minor also emphasizes the creative process, knowledge of how to produce a stage concert, and how to understand dance in socio-cultural and historical contexts. Our graduates have applied these skills and concepts in fields as diverse as education, publishing, journalism, anthropology, communication, social work, physical therapy, acting, broadcasting, and many more.

Requirements

Minor Hours Requirement

The Dance - Performance and Choregraphy minor requires a minimum of 18 hours.

Foundational Dance Requirements

Complete the following courses:
(Note: DANC 1210 and 1230 must be taken concurrently.)

DANC 1210 - Modern Dance Technique I Credit Hours: 2
DANC 1220 - Ballet Technique I Credit Hours: 1.5
DANC 1230 - Beginning Dance Composition I Credit Hours: 2
DANC 1250 - African Dance Technique I Credit Hours: 1.5
DANC 1801 - Dance Production I Credit Hours: 2
DANC 2700 - History, Traditions and Languages of Dance Credit Hours: 3

Dance Technique

Complete an additional 2 hours of dance technique from the following:

DANC 1211 - Modern Dance Technique II Credit Hours: 2
DANC 1221 - Ballet Technique II Credit Hours: 1.5
DANC 2010 - Dance Technique II Modern Credit Hours: 1.5
DANC 2020 - Dance Technique II Ballet Credit Hours: 1.5
DANC 2040 - Dance Technique II Jazz Credit Hours: 1.5
DANC 2250 - African Dance Technique II Credit Hours: 1.5
DANC 3360 - Dance Movement Lab Credit Hours: .5 - 5

Directed Electives

Complete 4 hours in elective dance courses. At least two courses must be at the 3000-level or above. These courses should be chosen in consultation with an academic advisor in the Dance Division.
