Program Overview

A major in physical education prepares students for careers as physical education teachers for children and youth grades prekindergarten through twelve (PreK-12 teaching license). All students interested in physical education will enter Ohio University as a premajor (prephysical education major code ND8838). Admission into the major is a competitive process requiring the student to formally apply to the major and be accepted, upon completion of the following:

  • Must achieve a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher
  • Must retake course if grade is below a C (2.0)
  • Must complete all skill and fitness program assessments
  • Must demonstrate appropriate levels of professionalism (Assessed throughout the program)

Admissions Information

Freshman/First-Year Admission

No requirements beyond University admission requirements to be in the premajor. Once all premajor requirements have been met as described above, the student must formally apply to the physical education major. Premajor to major forms can be obtained from your physical education advisor. These forms must be filled out and signed by your academic advisor and the program coordinator. The form is then taken to the Office of Student Affairs in the Patton College of Education. Your physical education major code will then be changed to BS8106. These forms are only processed the first two weeks of the semester.

Change of Program Policy

All students changing their major to physical education must first start out in the premajor (ND8838). Change of major forms can be obtained in Lindley Hall in the Patton College of Education. These forms are only processed the first two weeks of the semester.

Admission to the Physical Education Major

Once all premajor requirements have been completed, the student must formally apply to the physical education major through their assigned advisor. Premajor to major forms can be obtained from your physical education advisor. Upon acceptance into the physical education major, the next step is Admission to Teacher Candidacy. To obtain Teacher Candidacy status, the student must attend one of the scheduled meetings for Teacher Candidacy in Lindley Hall, Patton College of Education and complete an application acquired at the meeting.

Successful admission to Teacher Candidacy (3.0 GPA or higher and 21 or higher ACT or 1060 or higher SAT or successful completion of PRAXIS CORE, and 30 credit hours) will allow you to complete the 2000-level block in the Patton College of Education.

After successfully completing the 2000-level block you must apply for advanced standing to become eligible to take courses at the 3000- and 4000-level in the Patton College of Education. To obtain advanced standing status, the student must attend one of the scheduled meetings for advanced standing in Lindley Hall, Patton College of Education and complete an application acquired at the meeting. Students must receive a C (2.0) or higher in all physical and Teacher Candidacy courses and maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher.

External Transfer Admission

All transfer students must start out in the premajor until all transfer courses have been equated and all requirements to advance to the physical education major have been met. Once this has been done the procedure is the same for those students who have transferred into the major internally.

Opportunities Upon Graduation

A degree in physical education prepares you to teach physical education from prekindergarten through grade twelve. Ohio teacher licensure is dependent upon students’ scores on both sections of the Ohio Assessments for Educators exam (Assessment of professional knowledge multi-age and physical education content knowledge). Aside from a teaching career in physical education, a bachelor’s of science in physical education prepares students for employment in a variety of physical activity settings and provides a foundation for graduate level programs (e.g., coaching interscholastic athletics, youth services, campus, etc.).

Premajor, Major and Teacher Candidacy Requirements


  • Must achieve a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher for admission into the major
  • Must achieve a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for admission into professional education
  • Must maintain a cululative GPA of a 2.75 or higher throughout all coursework within the program for graduation requirements
  • Must retake course if grade is below a C (2.0)

  • Must demonstrate appropriate levels of professionalism (Assessed throughout the program)

Professional Internship in Teaching


All physical education and professional education course work must be completed before candidates can register for the following required courses. A professional internship application must be submitted at least one semester prior to the professional internship. This application can be accessed online at the Patton College of Education website. The application must be submitted by November 1, to the professional internship coordinators in the Patton College of Education and physical education/ teacher education program. Complete the following courses with a grade of C (2.0) or higher in EDPL 4650:
