ME6220: Early Childhood Intervention Specialist
Program Overview: The Master’s Degree in Education with a Major in Early Childhood Intervention Specialist (ECIS) meets the Ohio teacher licensure requirements for teaching children with special needs ages 3 to 8 (Pre-K through grade 3). This program is also available to those NOT holding a teaching license at the undergraduate level. The focus of the Special Education program at Ohio University centers on the delivery of quality services within limited resource environments.
Admissions Policy: Criteria for U.S. citizens, permanent residents and international students whose first language is English.
- Applications may be considered for admission without taking the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) if the applicant has either (a) 2.90 overall grade point average (4.00 point scale) on undergraduate work OR (b) 3.25 grade point average (4.00 point scale) on the last 90 quarter hours of undergraduate work.
- Applicants not meeting the requirements of item 1 may be considered for admission if they have either (a) 2.70-2.89 overall grade point average (4.00 point scale) on undergraduate work OR (b) 3.00-3.24 grade point average (4.00 point scale) on the last 90 quarter hours of undergraduate work AND a Graduate Record Exam (GRE) combined score of 900 on the verbal and the quantitative sections.
- Applicants not meeting the requirements for either 1 or 2 may be considered for admission if they have either (a) 2.50-2.69 overall grade point average (4.00 point scale) on undergraduate work OR (b) 2.70-2.99 grade point average (4.00 point scale) on the last 90 quarter hours of undergraduate work AND a Graduate Record Exam (GRE) combined score of 1000 on the verbal and the quantitative sections.
- Three written letters of recommendation
- A statement of professional goals related to the program you are entering of no specified length or format
- Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution or equivalent
Change Policy: No selective or limited admission requirements.
Transfer Policy: Upon admission, each graduate student is assigned an advisor to develop a program of study. A review of the candidate’s previous transcripts and experiences is taken into consideration. Some previous course work may transfer or be waived if taken within the last 5 years with the exception of Teacher Education core requirements.
Opportunities: The program prepares graduate students for a license to teach early childhood special education in PreK-grade 3 settings.
ME6236: Intervention Specialist (Mild to Moderate Needs)
Program Overview: The Master’s Degree in Education with a Major in Special Education Intervention Specialist for Mild Moderate Educational Needs K-12 is designed for those pursuing an initial teacher license or those who already hold another license and wish licensure to teach learners with mild to moderate disabilities (students with specific learning disabilities, mild cognitive disabilities, and/or emotional disturbance). The focus of the Special Education program at Ohio University centers on the delivery of quality services within limited resource environments

Program Overview: The Master’s Degree in Education with a Major in Special Education Intervention Specialist for Moderate to Intensive Educational Needs K-12 is designed for those pursuing an initial teacher license or those who already hold another license and wish licensure to teach learners with moderate to intensive disabilities. (students with moderate-severe cognitive/intellectual, physical and/or other multiple disabilities).The focus of the Special Education program at Ohio University centers on the delivery of quality services within limited resource environments.

ME6249: Special Education/Non Certification
Program Overview: The Master’s degree in Special Education non-certification is intended for those who have limited knowledge and experience and wish to study special education but who do not wish to obtain a teaching license in the United States. The program’s focus provides a strong research base upon which application is provided to the individual’s context and centers on the delivery of quality services within limited resource environments.
Admissions Policy: Criteria for students whose first language is not English.
- Certified Transcripts - From all institutions of higher learning showing the award of a Bachelor’s degree. Submit to: Graduate Studies, 220 R-Tech, Athens OH 45701.
- Three letters of recommendation (Two of the recommendations should be from college professors and one from an employer or professional colleague. The recommendations should be submitted in English; or, if the recommendations are in the native language, the original should be accompanied by a certified translation).
- Autobiography (This is not to exceed five typewritten pages. The autobiography should be submitted in English; or, if the autobiography is written in the native language, the original should be accompanied by a certified translation. This autobiography, as a minimum, should include the following information: educational experiences; professional work experiences; career goals; future expectations; major influencing factors in your life; professional organizations; why you are selecting Ohio University and the particular program you are applying to. You may include other information which you feel is relevant.
- Proof of Financial Responsibility (The form is enclosed with your application materials. ).
- Proof of English Proficiency. A student whose native language is not English, either:
- Must submit a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 550 (computer based 213); OR
- Have a TOEFL score ranging from 450 to 549 (computer based 133-210) which may be reviewed by the Graduate Committee (admission is not guaranteed).
- All admitted international students who submit a TOEFL score will be retested by the Ohio Program of Intensive English (OPIE) upon their arrival on-campus. Based upon this retest, the student will either be cleared for full-time academic study, or placed full or part-time in English language study.

Opportunities: This program prepares graduate students with knowledge and skills for careers in leadership positions in non-US schools, governmental agencies or other organizations that address the needs of individuals with special needs.
