Program Overview: The Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) offers an MS in ISE. Areas of faculty interest include manufacturing systems, scheduling, artificial intelligence, systems simulation, process planning, distribution systems, genetic algorithms, neural networks, data mining, supply chain management, human factors, quality control and reliability, technology management, applied optimization in finance and service sectors. The focus of graduate educational and research activities is on structuring the decision process, system analysis, and the design of complex systems that integrate technical, human, and economic resources within a variety of constraints and environments. The MS in ISE is designed to build upon mathematical and analytical expertise gained from a technical education and professional experience. It is heavily directed toward using the computer to solve manufacturing, supply chain, distribution, logistics, quality, reliability, human factors, finance and other service problems and includes courses from other departments to provide valuable interdisciplinary experiences. There are thesis and nonthesis options available. The thesis option requires a minimum of 30 semester hours including 4 hours of thesis (ISE 6950). The nonthesis option requires a minimum of 34 semester hours including 3 hours of scholarly project (ISE 6940), a formal written report, a nonthesis committee, and formal defense. All graduate students are required to take ISE 6300 in their first semester in residence and also ET 6020. Independent study may be taken for degree credit in addition to hours earned in ISE 6940 or 6950. A maximum of 8 credit hours of elective graduate level courses may be taken outside the department, provided they are included in an approved plan of study. You are also required to complete at least 7 semester hours in graduate-only courses, while others could be graduate courses that are cross-listed with certain undergraduate courses. A plan of study must be submitted to the ISE Graduate Chair for approval before the end of the second semester of study.

Admissions Policy: The department welcomes applications from engineering students and qualified students with a bachelor’s degree in physical sciences, including mathematics and computer science. Each candidate is evaluated on previous academic record, work experience, and career goals. All applicants are required to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), except in extenuating circumstances. International students are required to take TOEFL or equivalent. International students desiring a graduate teaching assistantship must pass a test of clarity of speech (SPEAK test). Financial aid is available to top applicants in the form of research and teaching assistantships.

Change Policy: No selective or limited admission requirements.

Transfer Policy: A maximum of 8 semester hours of elective graduate level courses may be taken outside the University, provided they are included in an approved plan of study.
