Program Overview: The Ph.D. program provides advanced training in historical research and writing. By agreement with the Ohio Board of Regents, the dissertation field must be in contemporary history, defined as the period since World War I. Deadline for application for fall semester admission with financial assistance is February 1.
Admissions Policy: An M.A. degree is a prerequisite for admission to the Ph.D. program. That M.A. degree should be in history, although a degree in a related field will be considered in exceptional cases.
Change Policy: No selective or limited admission requirements.
Transfer Policy: Students who transfer from another Ph.D. program usually will receive credit for only two or three courses at their previous university.
Opportunities: The Ph.D. program in history prepares students for teaching and research at the university or college level, research positions in government or private organizations, and a variety of other careers.
