Program Overview: The Environmental Studies program is the focus of sustainability education at Ohio University. The program prepares future environmental leaders, collaborates in teaching and research with faculty across disciplines, and works cooperatively with the community and region.

The Master of Science in Environmental Studies (MSES) is an interdisciplinary program of graduate coursework, research, and practicum experience. Created in 1970, the program targets students looking for a broader academic experience than a traditional discipline-specific course of study can provide. The program gives qualified students the flexibility to pursue integrated coursework, hands-on project experience, and research spanning multiple disciplines.

Faculty and student research and service projects have brought regional and national recognition to the program and to Ohio University. In addition, the Environmental Studies program enjoys collaborative relations with local community organizations through consultation and shared projects. Classroom, field experiences, internships, and research opportunities foster the skills and understanding of democratic citizenship, personal responsibility, communication, collaboration, and civic engagement. Guided by our goal to serve the community and region, MSES faculty and students work in partnerships to promote sustainable development that is scientifically rigorous and environmentally, economically, and socially acceptable.

The MSES degree immerses students in examining the context of environment in society and provides a strong foundation in ecology and sustainability. The degree also gives students the opportunity to take courses from multiple departments depending on their specific area of interest. Students can choose to complete a research-based thesis or an applied leadership project.
