The School also promotes excellence in the profession through scholarship and service.

The Ohio University School of Nursing’s vision is to provide accessible state-of-the-discipline undergraduate and graduate nursing education. The School will focus on fostering preservation, promotion, and restoration of health in the global community. Our graduates will be highly competent practitioners, leaders, and scholars who are grounded in a sense of inquiry and committed to human caring within a climate of diversity.

Overview

The School of Nursing offers a traditional campus-based Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program at Athens, Chillicothe, Eastern, Lancaster, Southern, and Zanesville (BS1221 ) as well as an online RN to BSN program (BS1203 ) designed for licensed RNs. The purpose is to prepare nurse generalists for professional practice and to provide a foundation for graduate study. The programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and approved by the Ohio Board of Nursing.

The majors in nursing include upper-division coursework in Nursing, University, and College requirements. It is possible to complete a minor in another discipline while completing the major in nursing. The traditional BSN program (BS1221 ) provides students with on-campus classroom lectures and simulation lab activities as well as regionalized clinical experiences.  The School of Nursing offers interactive online (Web-based) courses in the RN to BSN program (BS1203 ). This method of course delivery increases the availability of the BSN completion degree for licensed registered nurses.

Upon successful completion of Nursing, University, and College requirements, students in major codes BS1203  or BS1221  will receive the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. Following successful completion of the pre-licensure BSN program (BS1221 ), students are eligible to take the National Council Licensing Exam for registered nurses (NCLEX-RN).

The School of Nursing also offers an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Nursing (A.A.S.) program at Chillicothe, Southern, and Zanesville (AA2342 ). This two year associate degree program is accredited by Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN).  Following successful completion of the program, students are eligible to take the National Council Licensing Exam for registered nurses (NCLEX-RN).  For additional information, please call the campus location of your choice - Chillicothe, Southern, or Zanesville - or visit: http://www.ohio.edu/chsp/nursing/associate-degree.

BSN

Students seeking admission to the Ohio University School of Nursing traditional (on-campus) Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program (BS1221 ), first apply to Ohio University’s pre-BSN major (ND1220). Admission to the pre-nursing major (ND1220 ) is competitive and includes specific high school coursework, a minimum high school GPA of 3.0 (4.0 point scale), and meeting established Ohio University admission requirements. Admission to the pre-licensure BSN Program (BS1221) is a selective process which also includes a standardized admission exam. See the School of Nursing website for specific information regarding the BSN program requirements at https://www.ohio.edu/chsp/nursing/bachelors-degree

Clinical experiences are a large component of the pre-licensure BSN program (BS1221 ).  These experiences occur in a broad range of traditional and nontraditional health care and health maintenance settings. Students are responsible for transportation to the clinical experiences that include settings away from campus.

The Ohio University BSN program (BS1221  ) is available on the Athens campus and the regional campuses of Chillicothe, Eastern, Southern, and Zanesville.

RN to BSN

Ohio University’s online RN to BSN program (BS1203 ) is designed for currently licensed registered nurses (RNs) seeking to advance their careers through obtaining a bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN). For students interested in the online RN to BSN program (BS1203 ), see the program’s website for admission information: www.ohio.edu/nursing/RNtoBSN. Admitted students will receive an information packet detailing policies, procedures, and program instructions.

School Nurse Certificate Program

The School of Nursing has an approved School Nurse Certificate program offered online for those who have graduated with a BSN degree from Ohio University.  The School Nurse certificate requires a minimum of 15 credit hours and is for students interested in obtaining an Ohio Department of Education Pupil Service License to be a School Nurse in the state of Ohio.  Required courses include courses through the School of Nursing, as well as a course from psychology or health.  Students who are completing the Ohio University online RN to BSN program may take these courses concurrently.  Students who hold a nursing baccalaureate degree (BSN) from another institution can also complete the requirements.

A.A.S. in Nursing

Admission to the A.A.S. in Nursing (AA2342 ) program is competitive.  Scores on a required standardized admission test, grades, and prerequisite courses grade point average (GPA), are considered in making admission decisions.  This program also offers an LPN to A.A.S. in Nursing track option program.  Graduates of the A.A.S. in Nursing program may choose to enter the Ohio University RN to BSN program to further their education and achieve a BSN degree.  For additional information visit: http://www.ohio.edu/chsp/nursing/associate-degree.

Clinical experiences are a large component of the A.A.S. in Nursing program (AA2342).
