The award-winning faculty in Ohio University’s Department of History combines top quality undergraduate education with a nationally ranked graduate program. Our undergraduate majors have gone on to careers in everything from teaching to journalism, law, and business. Our masters’ students now enjoy careers ranging from policy analysis in Washington, D.C. to historical work for foreign governments. Our Ph.D. graduates hold academic and professional positions in the U.S. and abroad. Along with academic positions at major universities, they hold historian’s positions with government agencies, such as the National Archives and U.S. Army, and they serve in the diplomatic service.
Our faculty has repeatedly won awards for fine teaching, while writing critically and popularly acclaimed books on wide-ranging topics, such as the American presidency in the 20th century, the political left in the United States, trans-Atlantic migration to the American colonies, Nazi Germany, Stalin’s Soviet Union, globalization and free trade, independence movements in Southeast Asia, the Vietnam War and the mass media, women and gender roles in the 20th century, African slavery, African Americans in the U.S. Army, great power rivalry in Central Asia, and more.
The Department also sponsors an annual undergraduate student history conference.
