ML 2701 - Introduction to Latinx Studies This course introduces current topics affecting the Latinx communities both in the United States and globally. This interdisciplinary course covers topics such as the vitality of the Spanish language, immigration laws, Hispanic or Latinx identity, acculturation versus assimilation, Spanglish, and inclusive language. Students learn strategies to express and discuss ideas and opinions verbally and in writing, to apply critical thinking and teamwork skills to discern, engage and actively participate in decision-making activities affecting communities, and to ultimately become informed citizens.

- Students will be able to interpret written texts, documentaries and data relevant to Latinx studies, evaluate arguments in a logical fashion, and reflect on their findings.
- Students will be able to explain how analyzing and assessing socio-linguistic and socio-cultural issues affecting Latinx communities is contributing to how they are becoming informed citizens.
- Students will be able to describe ways in which the social identities of the investigators of Latinx studies affect the findings and methods of inquiry of linguistics and socio-cultural studies.
- Students will be able to describe their own cultural self-awareness and how Latinx cultures are developed.
- Students will be able to demonstrate openness, curiosity and empathy toward Latinx communities.
- Students will be able to contribute meaningful ideas, propose solutions and help make joint decisions during team discussions that will further the group’s task.
- Students will be able to use culturally-sensitive verbal and non-verbal communication to engage in productive discussion involving diverse viewpoints and manage team conflict respectfully and constructively.
- Students will be able to create a productive team climate and respond constructively to feedback from peers from their teams and other teams.
