MUS 1625 - The History of Jazz


This course studies jazz styles from the inception of jazz to the current era. Students will develop an understanding and appreciation for jazz music by exploring the social and musical implications of jazz in American culture through topical readings and critical listening.

Requisites: WARNING: No credit for both this course and the following (always deduct credit for first course taken): MUS 4280

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to employ principles, terminology, and methods relevant to jazz music.
  • Students will be able to analyze, interpret, and/or evaluate primary works of artistic expression in the jazz idiom.
  • Students will be able to explain relationships among cultural and historical contexts and jazz, including the experiences and contributions of musicians of color and women artists.
  • Students will be able to identify the elements and major style periods of jazz music in order to compare and contrast jazz with other genres.
  • Students will be able to synthesize information found in relevant sources in order to assess jazz both in terms of quality and genre/style.
  • Students will be able to articulate a specific position regarding the value and meaning of jazz in America and abroad.
  • Students will be able to logically state conclusions about the intersection of race and politics and the development of jazz.
  • Students will be able to critically consider and describe the issue of social biases when understanding jazz music.
