CARS 2310 - Classical Mythology


This course provides students with an introduction to the three levels of Classical mythology. The first is the mastery of names and stories. The second is the understanding of the literary or visual context of the myth. The third is the exploration of the meanings of the myth.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to employ principles, terminology, and methods of analyzing myths used in disciplines in the humanities.
  • Students will be able to analyze, interpret, and/or evaluate the use of myths in Classical literature and visual arts as the products of critical thought and/or the human imagination.
  • Students will be able to describe creative processes involved in producing literary works centered on Classical myths, and recognize connections between those processes and existing works.
  • Students will be able to explain relationships between myths in different cultural and/or historical contexts and the humanities.
  • Students will be able to communicate concepts and evidence related to the use of specific Classical myths, their symbols and themes.
  • Students will be able to explain how Classical myths have been adapted by ancient and modern cultures to support their different cultural agendas.
