CARS 2300 - Heroes in Classical Literature The best-known works of ancient Greco-Roman literature focus on the outstanding individuals whom we conventionally call “heroes.” This course introduces significant works of Greco-Roman literature in English translation. It focuses on their impact on Western culture. Readings may be drawn from ancient epic, tragedy, biography, and historiography. No prior knowledge of classical culture or classical languages required.

Lecture/Lab Hours: 3.0 lecture Grades: Eligible Grades: A-F,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I Course Transferability: OTM course: TMAH Arts & Humanities College Credit Plus: Level 1 Learning Outcomes: - Students will be able to recognize and discuss literary aspects and historical contexts for the central works of classical epic: Homer’s Iliad, Virgil’s Aeneid, and Ovid’s Metamorphoses.
- Students will be able to apply an understanding of the cultural, historical, and material contexts that shaped early Greece and the early Roman empire when discussing and writing about these texts.
- Students will be able to employ appropriate discipline-specific terms and concepts to interpret and analyze classical literary texts.
- Students will be able to use appropriate textual evidence to accurately communicate key concepts pertaining to the study of classical epic.
