BIOS 3205 - Cell and Microbiology Techniques Students gain hands-on experience in modern techniques used in microbiology and cell biology. Students examine properties of proteins, cells, and organisms using genetic, molecular, microscopic, and transgenic techniques. The course is particularly useful for those interested in a career in biological research, microbiology, or medicine.
Requisites: BIOS 3200 or concurrent Credit Hours: 2 OHIO BRICKS: Bridge: Learning and Doing Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts. Lecture/Lab Hours: 4.0 laboratory Grades: Eligible Grades: A-F,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I Learning Outcomes: - Students will be able to maintain a contemporaneous lab notebook detailing their experiments and results.
- Students will be able to perform and explain the need for aseptic technique by building upon their biology knowledge.
- Students will be able to analyze and explain the results of their protein experiments using and transferring the knowledge gained across the disciplines of biology, chemistry, and mathematics.
- Students will be able to connect their knowledge of genes, proteins, cell functions, and human disease to the performance of biological research and experiments.
- Students will be able to perform regular and fluorescent photo-microscopy by building upon their biology knowledge and experience.
- Students will be able to adapt computer skills to perform basic bioinformatics searches on genes, proteins, and associated human diseases.
- Students will be able to record, analyze, and explain scientific experiments in worksheet form and in laboratory report form.
- Students will be able to present their own transgenic projects to an audience and respond to questions about those projects.
- Students will be able to demonstrate a developing sense of self as a learner in biological research, microbiology, and/or medicine and build on their prior experience in biology to respond to new and challenging contexts.
