OCOM 6013 - Health Systems Science 2


This is the second in a series of courses in Health Systems Science and will build on skills from HSS1 in health systems. This will include examination of the health system function and failings. Further skills in teamwork and team communication strategies utilize information systems to evaluate the panel and community outcomes by zip code. These evaluations apply to team projects and quality improvement by team/panel. Initial education about community engagement and the use of executive management skills to address community partners round out HSS2.

Course Outcomes
  • Students will know the various types of medical practices and national health care delivery systems, including types of third-party coverage and methods of payment as demonstrated in reflective paper and Quality Improvement Journal
  • Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge and report the of impact of health care delivery systems on patient care at local and national levels, as evidenced through examination questions, reflection papers, and Quality Improvement Journals
  • Students will be able to demonstrate awareness of cost considerations by offering at least two reasonable options in care team meetings or patient presentations, for which the student is responsible/assigned that show awareness of cost
  • Students will be able to analyze practice and individual patient satisfaction data, demonstrated by utilizing data to contribute to group ideas about improvement processes
  • Students will be able to use the clinical informatics provided to conduct a data collection of specified variables on a population of interest (e.g. peak flows and emergency visits on all asthmatics age 11-17)
  • Students will be able to interpret measure of central tendency, including mode, median and mean, measures of variability, including variance and standard deviation
  • Students will be able to explain and interpret measures of injury and death in forms of rate, ratio, and proportion including incidence and prevalence
  • Students will be able to preform regular self-assessment and self-calibration evidenced by setting future learning and improvement goals
  • Students will be able to actively demonstrate evidence of individual responsibility for errors as evidenced in journaling in Quality Improvement journal
  • Students will be able to list system errors and sources for improvement after personal roles and sources for improvement are listed in Quality Improvement journals
  • Students will be able to effectively communicate critical information in a timely manner within the interprofessional team employing check-backs and callouts that facilitate closed-loop communication as identified in Teamstepps training
  • Students will be able to summarize discussions, check for understanding and conclude conversations verifying that all questions and concerns have been addressed
  • Students will be able to identify three resources (literature, training, individuals, teams, peers, departments, mentors/coaches, etc.) to aide with interfrofessional skills when needed
  • Students will be able to recognize and list health system challenges and social determinants of health as evidenced by Quality Improvement journal and reflective paper
  • Students will be able to perform his/her assigned role/task appropriately when functioning as part of an interprofessional team, including being on time and prepared for group meetings
