CLWR 4340 - Sufism-Mysticism and Asceticism in Islam This course introduces the ‘mystical’ dimension of Islam, known as Sufism. It begins by probing key terms such as ‘Sufism,’ ‘asceticism,’ and ‘mysticism.’ Then it traces the emergence of Sufism during the formative period of the Islamic political and religious systems. The bulk of the course explores modern Sufi movements from South/Southeast Asia and Central Asia to Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and the United States.
Requisites: Jr or Sr Credit Hours: 3 Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts. Lecture/Lab Hours: 3.0 lecture Grades: Eligible Grades: A-F,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I Learning Outcomes: - Compare and contrast the manifestation of Sufism in four separate geographical and cultural locations, including but not limited to: e.g. Southeast Asia (Java); North Africa (Morocco); West Asia (Turkey); and the North Atlantic (UK and USA).
- Define what Sufism is, particularly in relation to the concepts of ‘mysticism’ and ‘asceticism’.
- Describe the diverse historical origins and development of Sufism.
- Develop collaborative research and writing skills by working with a partner to investigate in depth and report orally and in writing, possibly in a Wiki format, on one particular aspect of classical or contemporary Sufism.
- Identify and define key Sufi concepts.
